Costa Rica News – A family is struggling to get their family member back into the country. Their hope is that Gonzalo Gutierrez will be able to finish the remainder of his sentence in one of the prisons in Costa Rica.
He was condemned in 2007, in the United States, after being found guilty of the crime of child pornography production and an offense of misuse of a diplomatic passport.
He must spend 20 years in prison.
Gutierrez’ sister explains that their mother is about to turn 90, her health is declining and all she does is ask for him. She doesn’t understand what happened and everyday she gets ready in nice clothes, cleans her shoes and sits down to wait for him.
They tied to repatriate him unsuccessfully in 2014. The US is not required to respond in any specific amount of time or give a reason if they decide against sending him to Costa Rica.
The family is trying again now that the required two years have passed and their mothers’ health is deteriorating.
Gutierrez’ request is one of 45 made by the Ministry of Justice to different countries to repatriate prisoners.
