Costa Rica News – This first time I read about this I thought to myself this must be from The Onion, but it is in fact true.
A fake lawyer is accused of showing a false card that says he is part of the Bar Association.
He defended at least two people in court. For one, he won the case and for the other he claimed to be sick and did not return, as the judge found out he was not a real lawyer.
It is not yet known whether these cases will be nullified.
The Judicial Branch indicates that for now there is no institutional level protocol to indicate how the authenticity of the card should be verified.
They only check that the name is not on the list of suspended lawyers.
The man was arrested on Thursday at his home in Barrio Naciones Unidas, San Jose. Until his trial, he must sign in every week, maintain a fixed address and avoid criminal acts.
He was previously in trouble with the law for crimes of computer fraud and counterfeiting currency-matched securities. He was granted parole in October 2015 and his sentence is due to terminate this June if he fulfilled the conditions.
The Public Ministry is requesting that this benefit be revoked.
