Ghosts & the Supernatural – The late Paul Leaird is my first cousin. Paul lived an adventurous life. He was in the 1st Calvary – US Army – Vietnam. He was also stationed with the US Army in Germany. Highest rank obtained in the US Army: Master Sergeant. For a while he worked with the State of California’s EDD (Employment Development Department) and he did a term as the Mayor of Lehigh, Oklahoma. Paul was also an avid international traveler, as most of my family are.
During some R&R while stationed in Germany, Paul visited Romania. He had a heart long desire to see Vlad Dracul’s aka Dracula’s castle. Traveling to Romania from Germany, he took the train and various buses. Some of the places he traveled through were: Czechlosvokia, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Serbia, Wallachia and finally Romania.
Paul tells me at the Danube River in Romania, locals have said that they saw a mermaid sitting on a rock, when they approached the mermaid, she scurried off to a nearby wave and disappeared in the river. This is one of the many legends, myths and stories of haunted Romania. CRYPTID IDENTIFIED: MERMAID OF DANUBE RIVER
One of the places that Paul visited was a place called Nicolae Bazilescu Park. This is a place where Paul met up with a nice Romanian girl and enjoyed a nice rendezvous. Paul and his new female friend visited the Summer Theatre built in 1953. Paul’s new friend told him that the park is very haunted and that late at night you can hear loud, harsh voices talking and you cannot make out the words. Paul’s friend also explains that Nicolae Balcescu haunts the park and some people have heard him coughing. While alive he had a heavy cough. Paul’s lady friend took him to the House of the Devil, located at General Praporgescu Street. There is ivy that covers the majority of this house. According to Paul’s friend the house had two tragic events. There was a man that killed two women at this location and in a span of a few years, a woman committed suicide at this home. During the full moon, on one of the walls, the number 666 can be seen. Paul says that as he walked past the house, he felt the feeling of dread. The house radiates hatred according to Paul. Paul’s Romanian girlfriend took him to the Witches’ Pond. Since Paul has a fascination with Dracula, this was the perfect place to take him. The pond is located at Boldu-Creteasca Forest. According to legend this is where Dracula was beheaded. It is said that women who were pregnant, went to this pond to abort their fetuses. Animals are afraid of this pond. Animals will not drink from this pond and there are no frogs in this pond. Gypsy witches go to this pond once a year to practice their magical rituals. UFO activity has been seen at this pond and some of the locals believe that the UFOs come out of the pond causing globular lightning and sudden contained storms. The pond remains the same, it never expands during rain and it doesn’t get smaller during drought, which people see as a strange phenomenon of this pond. During November and December evenings, an old hag holding a sickle is sometimes seen in the nearby shrubbery around the pond. GHOST IDENTIFIED: OLD HAG OF WITCHES’ POND.
Paul and his friend did not go inside Dracula’s Castle aka Bran Castle, but looked at it from afar. Bran Castle is situated near Bran and in the immediate vicinity of Braºov. It is now a national monument and landmark in Romania. The fortress is situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. Paul wondered if Bran Castle is haunted by the presence of Dracula. Paul’s female friend guarantees it and says that her friends have seen the silhouette of an entity near the castle and they believe it is Dracula. Paul never saw this entity, but felt overwhelmed with emotion looking at Bran Castle.
Paul told me that he felt Romanian is rich with tales of paranormal activity.
One of the last places visited by Paul and his friend in Transylvania was the forest of Hoia-Baciu – this forest is located west of the City of Cluj-Napoca. According to Paul’s friend, disc shaped UFOs have been seen hovering over this forest and a friend of Paul’s female friend saw a UFO once in this forest sending down a beam of light. The light was projected in such a way that the light did not hit a specific target, but ended midway before touching the ground. Paul’s female friend has also heard about werewolves drinking water from a creek in this forest. Paul and his female friend went outside of this forest, but not inside this forest.
