Costa Rica Entertainment – The Encounter of Cultures holiday celebration of October 12th will be moved to Monday the 16th this year.
When the 12th does not fall on a Monday the holiday is moved to the following Monday, according to article 148 of the Labor Code.
According to article 147 of the same legislation, the holiday is not mandatory. Those who work the holiday will be paid normally.
If companies have weekly payments, employes should be paid the normal way the week of October 9 to 15th, including the 12th. The following week, which corresponds to the enjoyment of the holiday, the 16th does not have to be paid in the case that the worker has off.
Those that pay monthly salaries have to pay the full amount even when there are holidays.
If the workers take the holiday on and work on the 16th as a transferred holiday, the salary should be added to to complete a double payment and overtime worked on the 16th must be payed time and a half or a triple payment.
