The Unfortunate Recurrence:
Recent heavy downpours wreaked havoc in the Jacó region and surrounding areas, causing emergency situations in several sectors. Fortunately, the incident didn’t result in any serious injuries, but officials are emphasizing the importance of safety measures.
The Impact on Key Locations:
Starting from 3:30 PM yesterday, intense rainfall resulted in significant flooding across prominent regions including Jacó, Garabito, Puntarenas, and Caldera. Key streets were submerged, making mobility a major challenge, with water inching its way perilously close to the Jaco Walk shopping center.
Residents Raise Concerns:
Local inhabitants highlight this as a recurring issue, expressing their frustration at the Municipality’s lack of proactive measures. They claim improper maintenance of mountain water channels exacerbates the flooding situation. Blocked rivers and streams, often clogged by logs and debris, redirect the water flow straight to the heart of the town.
Extent of the Damage:
In Jacó, minor damages to shopping facilities have been reported. However, Caldera faced the brunt with numerous houses and commercial establishments flooded. Due to the escalated threat of high tides and intense waves, the Fire Department deemed it necessary to shut down route 23 at its 13th kilometer. Acting swiftly, the Red Cross undertook evacuation operations, moving 18 individuals from the vulnerable beach area.
Vital Safety Recommendations:
Authorities are urging both locals and tourists to:
- Be vigilant of sudden water level changes.
- Establish safe evacuation paths and gathering points.
- Refrain from crossing rivers or water bodies during emergencies.
- Maintain a safe distance from fallen power cables.
- Ensure that all electrical setups, both internal and external, are properly secured and in optimal condition prior to any potential emergency.
