Residents of both Heredia and Alajuela are a bit on edge, after tremors persisted from before dawn until 7 am on Friday. While no major damage or injuries have been recorded, it’s unsettling and dizzying to feel 30 tremors or aftershocks!
The earthquakes began at 2:24 am. Their magnitudes registered between 2.3 and 5. The first was the strongest, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori).
It was felt in San Rafael, Barva, and Santo Domingo in Heredia as well as in Alajuela, Grecia, and a number of spots in San José. The epicenter was 5 km north of Varablanca, Heredia. Truckers traveling between there and Cinchona reported small landslides from the quakes. Some businesses reported finding fallen objects upon opening. There were some fallen rocks and trees.
The only report police had to respond to was for some falling material on route 126. There’s normal passage on the road at this time. Cracks may be discovered on roads or farms over the next few hours, due to the type of soil in the area.
