4 people who were arrested in 2020 and spent nearly two years in prison have been released. They were found on a boat in the Caribbean, on September 3, 2020, with 75 kilos of cocaine.
The suspects, from Colombia and Nicaragua, are aged from 29 to 62. They were found traveling at full speed after an aircraft alerted authorities that they were launching packages into the sea.
They were captured because of an international patrol agreement with the United States and then prosecuted for drug trafficking.
There were procedural errors in the case that authorities did not specify, however, because of these errors, the four suspects were acquitted by a unanimous vote.
Something similar happened in 2017. A judge ordered the release of four suspected international drug traffickers because of an error in counting bags of marijuana seized in the case.
There is an increase in crime in Limón and some believe this is because many criminals return to the streets too quickly.
