Costa Rica News – If you work on Mother’s Day, you will be paid double. The holiday, celebrated today, is a mandatory payment holiday.
Note that no employee is required to work on the holiday but may if he or she agrees to. The Ministry of Labor and Social Security explains that one can refuse to work the day and must not be penalized.
The payment earned for work on the holiday is determined by how the company normally pays. If it pays days worked at the end of the week, one day must be added for Mother’s Day if not worked. If worked, it must be paid double. Those who pay biweekly or monthly or that pay salary for each day of the month, must pay the normal wage and add a day to complete the double payment established by law.
Additionally, if extra hours are worked on the holiday, they are to be paid with a triple payment.
These rules apply to all companies, whether national, transnational or international. All companies are obligated to grant the holiday and appropriate payments to all people working in Costa Rica.
