Costa Rica News – There’s a crack in the Irazu volcano and this threatens seven telecommunications antennas installed there, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica.
These antennas are used by rescue workers, police and airports, in addition to transmitting radio and TV channels.
All of these are at risk of interruption if the gap grows much more.
The existing crack is 10-15 centimeters deep at most points along the 98 meter stretch, but up to 90 centimeters deep and 1.4 meters wide in some parts. The crack is going to go further and create secondary cracks, according to experts.
The antennas will yield at some point. It’s not a matter of IF but WHEN.
Experts say they haven’t seen such a significant fracture in over a decade.
The volcano produced 5-7 earthquakes per day in October and this crack was a result of an earthquake on December 17.
