Costa Rica Travel News – Pristine beaches, jungles that look straight out of Jurassic Park, and a million adventure activities to choose from make Costa Rica the ideal vacation spot. For those of you crazy ladies who like to travel alone, Costa Rica is the safest country you’ll find in Central or South America. That doesn’t mean you should travel alone, though. If you must do so please at least follow the advice below.
Costa Rica is a paradise, but a poor one! This means that petty theft is tremendously common. Machismo culture and the economic status of the country make it a bit unsafe for a woman to travel alone. Generally, you should ignore the comments shouted at you by guys. Should they start to follow you, contact police or approach older women or couples for help.
In tourist areas it’s fine to wear normal swimwear but in more rural areas people dress modestly. You should do the same to avoid insulting anyone or attracting bad attention. Lock up your valuables and passports before going to the beach and don’t tell anyone where you are staying.
Don’t flirt when you are out alone. Guys will assume that your flirting will lead to more. Do not go to a stranger’s house for any reason. Be cautious of your surroundings at all times. Don’t walk on the beach or in secluded areas alone ever, especially at night. Keep in mind it gets dark after 6 p.m. so it’s best to meet a group of travelers you can trust in the day time and stick with them after dark to be safe.
In case of extreme emergencies you should carry a phone, the number for your embassy, and the number for a taxi company. Write down the name of your hotel so you can give it to a taxi driver. I have seen some girls wandering around drunk and alone looking for a hotel they forgot the name of- not a good idea!
