80% of those hospitalized due to covid-19 are under age 70. This is not something that just affects seniors, as rumor has it. There were actually more cases among minors than among seniors, with 21,070 and 18,425 cases, respectively. This is little known, and greatly alarming, especially since schools are remaining open while most businesses are being shut down in the Central Valley.
Since the start of the pandemic, we have lost 3,231 people to covid-19 in Costa Rica. There are currently 44,751 active cases and 203,009 patients who have recovered. Covid seems to affect men and women at similar rates. 124,731 cases were women and 126,260 were men.
There are 531 covid patients in the hospital currently and 380 of them require Intensive Care. 94% of ICU beds are taken. Between the new variants, the exponential growth, and the relaxation of preventive measures, April was the worst month since the start of the pandemic.
The National Emergency Commission’s president called this a critical moment and asked that those in the Central Valley stay home as much as possible for the next week and that we all make the maximum effort to protect ourselves and others.
