Costa Rica News – On Friday night, the Turrialba volcano erupted after nine months without doing so. It exploded in an eruption that launched rocks in a radius greater than 200 meters. This is a considerable distance.
The summit of the crater must be kept off limits to visitors at this time for protection. The fragments thrown were several centimeters. Also recorded was the exit of thick material that is not common. The material will be studied to determine if it is new or if it is old material that had solidified in the crater forming a plug.
After the eruption no others were recorded, only ash and gas have been registered. On Monday morning the emanation of ash lasted over an hour and was observed from many points due to the clear morning.
Also on Monday morning, a change in the direction of the wind delayed entry to the Poás Volcano National Park which has recently been reopened after 16 months closed.
The change in wind led to a concentration of sulfur dioxide above the maximum limit. Once it cleared, tourists were allowed to enter.
