A Strategic Alliance: CATIE & SCACR
The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Centre (CATIE) and the Specialty Coffee Association of Costa Rica (SCACR) have initiated a strategic partnership, launching an NFT collection. This collection, inspired by CATIE’s twelve distinct coffee varietals, is designed to generate funds for coffee conservation and research projects.
NFT Auction: A Tech-Savvy Fundraiser
BIOCENFT, a prominent NFT distribution firm, will orchestrate the auction, with the proceeds channelled towards promoting CATIE’s International Coffee Collection – the fourth-largest of its kind globally. BIOCENFT CEO Walter Aguilar sees this as a golden opportunity for both coffee aficionados and NFT enthusiasts to back organizations pivotal to the future of Costa Rican coffee.
COFFEEISART: NFTs for Conservation
The twelve NFTs, mirroring the characteristics of coffee varieties like Geisha, Wush-Wush, Mibirizi, among others, not only represent unique designs but also embody SCACR and CATIE’s commitment to coffee biodiversity and conservation. “Leveraging NFT technology enhances our ability to spread knowledge and celebrate coffee culture on various scales,” remarked Noelia Villalobos, SCACR’s Executive Director.
Diversified NFT Pricing: Accessible Art
With prices ranging from $20 to $12,000 USD, these NFTs are accessible in Gold, Silver, and Standard editions via BIOCENFT’s official website. The funds raised will be invested in developing coffee strains resistant to pests and diseases while aligning Costa Rican coffee standards with global marketing strategies to penetrate new markets.

The European Union (EU) is set to enforce a new law by the end of 2024, aimed at curbing the import of commodities associated with global deforestation. This legislation will encompass various commodities, including coffee.
Global Coffee Industry: A Race Against Time
Many international coffee corporations are anticipated to struggle with compliance to the EU’s impending regulations, as per industry reports. This scenario might inadvertently place small farmers at a disadvantage.
A Digital Dawn for Coffee Conservation
This groundbreaking initiative by CATIE, SCACR, and BIOCENFT signifies a harmonious blend of tradition and technology, where NFTs serve as digital catalysts promoting coffee conservation and research in Costa Rica.
