Costa Rica News – The slopes of the highest mountain in the country will serve as the setting for a celebration that begins today and ends on Monday. It is the Carrera Internacional Ecológica y Cultural al Cerro Chirripó. In English: the International Chirripó Marathon.
Today the events began with Walter Rojas, the first Costa Rican to climb Mount Everest, speaking to the group and followed by karaoke at the community center.
Tomorrow, hundreds of athletic competitors arrive from all over the world to race 34-km up and down the country’s highest peak – Cerro Chirripó!
Starting at 7 a.m. (in the cool!) runners leave from Plaza de San Gerardo de Rivas, heading uphill to the Crestones base camp and down again. The winner usually returns in just over 3 hours, though the fun goes on all day as young and old, women and men, return to the plaza.
Fifteen minutes later, they give the starting signal for the charity walk “Take care of our resources”
The festival also includes the opening of the second floor community room of San Gerardo de Rivas, from 8:30 am, recreational areas for the kids to enjoy.
Inflatables, competitions, exhibitions of stuffed animals, storytelling and more is what is offer for the children.
Events starting Saturday.
