Costa Rica’s Battle Against the Underworld: The Hunt for Diablo and His Syndicate

Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Organism (OIJ) launched a massive operation early Monday morning. Their target? The notorious criminal syndicate led by Alejandro Arias Monge, infamously known as Diablo, one of the most elusive drug lords in the country.

The Dawn Raid: A Strategic Strike Against Organized Crime

The operation was a carefully orchestrated ballet of law enforcement precision, with 40 raids carried out in a bid to detain 29 individuals linked to Diablo’s empire. It was a large-scale effort that spanned across the province of Limón, touching the veins of Santa Rosa, Colorado, Ticabán, and other areas known for being criminal hotspots. The OIJ’s reach extended beyond Limón, sweeping through El Tanque, La Fortuna de San Carlos, Coronado, Montes de Oca in San José, and Sarapiquí in Heredia.

The operation’s success was marked by the capture of 19 individuals, including three women, who had been integral to the syndicate’s drug trafficking and money laundering operations. Among the high-profile arrests were Diablo’s family members, snaring his wife and a brother, and the organization’s second-in-command. This individual, a key logistical coordinator, was a linchpin in Diablo’s nefarious activities.

Authorities didn’t just aim to handcuff the suspects; they targeted the syndicate’s assets too. Their haul? Around 600 head of cattle, 20 high-end vehicles, and various properties, all allegedly tied to the criminal network. This operation builds on previous efforts, where 34 associates of Diablo were nabbed, with 28 currently behind bars.
