2024 brings a refreshing twist for Costa Rican drivers – a slight decrease in traffic fines! The Ministry of Public Transports, with the backing of the Court Superior Council, has decided to give wallets a break by reducing traffic fines by 1.04% starting January 1, 2024. But don’t let this financial breather fool you; the rules of the road remain as stringent as ever.
A Dip in the Fines, But Not in Vigilance
In this new scheme, “A-Level” violations like drunk driving and speeding will see a fine of around $680. But it’s not just about the money – offenders also get a 6-point penalty on their driver’s license. Accumulate 6 points, and say goodbye to your driving privileges. You’ll be back to driving school, trying to score at least 70 out of 100 to reclaim your license.
Tiered Fines for Varied Offenses
“B-Level” violations, such as motorcycle adventures with toddlers or ignoring child safety in vehicles, will attract a $460 fine and a 4-point license penalty. Meanwhile, “C-Level” fines for driving on sidewalks or the infamous lap-pet driving will lighten your wallet by about $230.
Don’t get too comfortable though; even “D-Level” offenses like beach driving escapades or creative but illegal parking spots will cost you around $115. And for those small but sneaky “E-Level” violations like cruising with an expired license or lacking a fire extinguisher, prepare to part with $50.
Where Does the Fine Money Go?
The collected fines are more than just a slap on the wrist; they fuel various essential services. They cover Traffic Police expenses, fund road safety campaigns, maintain traffic signs, and even support the Red Cross. So, in a way, your misadventures contribute to the greater good!

No Holiday Breaks for Traffic Rules
The Traffic Police are in no holiday mood when it comes to enforcing rules. They’ve rolled out the “Safe Christmas Operation” for increased surveillance and security during the festive season. With 415 deaths in traffic accidents reported till October and last year closing at over 480, the message is clear: respect the law and drive safely.
A Lighter Load, Heavier Responsibility
The reduction in traffic fines in Costa Rica for 2024 may be a small financial relief, but it comes with a reminder of the responsibility every driver holds. Stay cautious, respect the rules, and remember – even if the fines are lighter, the consequences of reckless driving are not.
