A Commitment Beyond Borders
Costa Rican national, Roy Eduardo Rojas Espinoza, met his untimely demise amidst the tumult of the Ukrainian conflict. Friends often questioned his motives, but for Roy, this battle symbolized a universal struggle.
Serving with Dedication
Roy’s sense of duty was evident long before he joined the Ukrainian forces. With 11 years of service in Costa Rica’s Public Force and later in the Guadalupe Municipal Police in Goicoechea, he was no stranger to commitment. Yet, his heart was set on a higher calling: joining the Territorial Defense Legion of Ukraine.
Departure with a Heavy Heart
Understanding the depths of his mother’s worries, Roy embarked on this perilous journey clandestinely, sparing her the heartbreak of saying goodbye. His valorous act was against the invading Russian forces in Ukraine.
A Painful Confirmation
Roy’s tragic end was confirmed by one of his closest friends, James Jarquín. The news shattered their tight-knit circle.
A Mother’s Agonizing Wait
Amid the sorrow of her son’s death, Roy’s mother grapples with a heart-wrenching predicament. Securing her son’s remains and obtaining a death certificate has been an elusive challenge. Repeated efforts to liaise with the Ukrainian consul in San José have yielded little respite. While the consul assures adherence to official protocols, a grieving mother waits, mired in uncertainty and anguish.
