At the age of 5, Luis Castillo Campos was already studying at the National Institute of Music. He studied violin and flute. By 11, he was in the Children’s Symphony Orchestra. He later dedicated himself to piano, studied at the Higher Institute of Arts, and then completed a baccalaureate at the Zurich University of the Arts, in Switzerland.
He’s now pursuing a master’s in orchestral conducting at the Vienna University of Music and Dramatic Art, in Austria, and has some big news. He was chosen out of 200 candidates to become an assistant conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He will be there, learning under Edward Gardner, for eight weeks.
He got this position after an audition the third week of January. He called the audition “amazing” and spoke of enjoying the level of intensity. He arrived at the audition with the attitude of “If the director is honest and prepared, the musicians will be very receptive.” He plans to learn a lot and bring a fresh perspective.
He has been named an Equilibrium Young Artist and has held prestigious positions like assistant conductor with orchestras in France, Denmark, and Switzerland.
We will be able to witness his work here in Costa Rica, in August, with the Heredia Symphony Orchestra. He will conduct two very important and complex works.
