Costa Rica News – A young man from Alajuela designed and programed his own prosthesis. What an impressive accomplishment. Fabián Porras, 18, resident of Turrúcares, will represent the country at the Latin American Youth Science and Technology Fair in Panama next October.
He lost his left arm when he was a year and a half old. He decided to make one that responds to his voice commands, such as “open/close,” with the help of his professor. He’s worked on the device since 2016.
He tried a prosthetic limb at age 12 but it hurt to use it. He had it saved and used it as a basis for his first attempt to make one. He has developed his ideas further and made the first voice activated one. It has 3D printed parts and is more aesthetic.
His family is very proud of him. He has developed his skills in his field of Industrial Electronics and has become an inspiration for others. He wants to help others who need artificial limbs.
