Costa Rica Sports News – After losing a key member of their defense Bryan Oviedo, Costa Rica’s World Cup hopes suffered another major blow this past week when another one of their top players, striker Alvaro Saborio, was ruled out of next month’s World Cup in Brazil with a fractured metatarsal in his foot.
The injury was suffered by Saborio during a closed-door training session this past Thursday. Costa Rica’s coach, Jorge Luis Pinto, after extent of the injury was verified,that his#1 striker would miss the entire World Cup tournament.
Costa Rica will face England, Italy and Uruguay in Group D in Brazil. The 32-year-old Saborio, who currently plays for Real Salt Lake in the MLS league, has scored 32 goals in 93 games for Costa Rica.
His loss coupled with the loss of Oviedo means that Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell will need to step up their level of play to make up for the losses of these key players.
An already tough group just got a little harder to make it out of but Italy in 1990 when Costa Rica surprised the world is in the back of their minds.
