Costa Rica News – For everyone that has ever thought of buying a vehicle in Costa Rica or thought of shipping a vehicle to Costa Rica you already know how ridiculous the import taxes on vehicles is in Costa Rica.
Right now before this change the taxes on Costa Rica vehicle imports were the following:
- Current year and 3 years back – 52.29%
- 4 and 5 years back – 63.91%
- 6 year and more – 79.03%
If you thought about shipping a car before instead of buying a used lemon from Craigslist or saw the astronomical prices of used cars in the lots around Costa Rica, you had a tough decision to make on whether to buy a car here and take the risk of no warranty or ship a vehicle down and take it up the pooper with the Costa Rican import taxes.
That decision is about to get a little easier but just for car between 3 and 6 years old. Now it looks like this will boost a few more imported cars and SUVs entering the country.
The new law that will be put into place will actually decrease the amounts for cars between 3 and 6 years old. It has dropped from 63% to 53%, which is still high but at least has been dropped.
Current year and 6 years back – 53%
6 years back or older- 79%
For people bringing in vehicles between 3 and 6 years old this law that is being put in place that will allow you to bring in a reliable vehicle from the USA or Canada for a reasonable amount. But if you read between the lines this is not going to do much most likely.
Plus this is supposed to happen in 10 days but my guess would be it takes longer to implement the new tax code for vehicle imports.
