Costa Rica News – This weekend, two tourists were murdered. There have been 371 murders in Costa Rica this year, these two being the first among tourists.
The tragic events happened in Tortuguero and Cóbano.
Authorities are alarmed and intensifying investigations in each case. The body of Spaniard Arcanza Gutiérrez López, 30 years old, was found on a sandy strip between the Caribbean Sea and a fresh water channel. Less than 24 hours later the Mexican Maria Trinidad Mathus, 25, died when assailants drowned her.
The suspects in Cóbano are accused of sexual abuse and qualified homicide. The woman had been walking with a friend when they were assaulted. The surviving friend gave her statement to authorities. Neighbors of the area beat one of the suspects before he was detained by police.
The situation in Tortuguero seems to be that the suspect is a man who the woman met a day earlier. The murder seems to have had a sexual motivation. Despite suspicions, the subject has been released without any precautionary measures.
