Businessmen are asking for the control of adventure tourism from the Ministry of Health to the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism (ICT) because it seems it hasn’t been controlled well enough.
The regulations issued in 2016 requires checks on insurance policies, luggage, certification of guides, and more. This executive decree establishes that the Ministry of Health will verify compliance.
The Ministry of Health may lack experience in the subject or not have the resources but it’s important that someone is making sure tour companies have permission to operate and do so safely.
Thousands raft in Costa Rica annually with very few accidents but that’s of little comfort following such a tragic accident that cost 5 lives. In fact, since last March, at least 16 foreigners died in tourism activities in Costa Rica.
