Costa Rica News – Ticos will start testing cures for malaria, Chagas disease, papalomoyo and toxoplasmosis on mice.
Misael Chinchilla is the leader of these studies that will be done by a group of scientists from the University of Medical Sciences.
The tests for possible drugs against diseases transmitted by parasites will begin in a couple of months. Mice were chosen because of the effectiveness of seeing how well the treatment works in them.
This is the preclinical phase, before tests in humans.
Four people took courses to learn how to treat laboratory animals and give them dignity. They are treated like a patient.
The substances to be tested were previously discovered by a group of specialists in parasitology. They were successfully lab tested in interaction with cells, which happens before animal testing.
They are compounds derived from plants that are based on studies and findings started 15 years ago.
