Costa Rica News – “ONLY FOR WOMEN. THOSE BORN WITH A VAGINA. MEN AND GAYS USE THE OTHER BATHROOM”
A disparaging sign has led the Municipality of Heredia to ask the Cadena de Detallistas Herediano retail store for an explanation.
The sign with the derogatory message against transgenders “outraged” municipal officials, especially considering that in 2013 the Municipality declared itself free of discrimination.
Heredia mayor, José Manuel Ulate, said he will demand as soon as possible that the store remove the message. Ulate added that although it is a private company, it should maintain respect for diversity.
The message did not go unnoticed in the trans community, with the social media abuzz with commentary and a firm rejection of the message.
Enzo Bruno, spokesperson for the Hombres Trans de Costa Rica, said the use of public toilets is a sensitive issue for transgender people, especially for those in transition to the gender but maintain their original physical features.
Bruno added that the message is contemptuous not only for people of the trans community but also misogynist.
The spokesperson said that the person who took the photo of the message did not report it to the store management for fear of reprisals, given the stigma suffered by this group.
