Carlos Alvarado stands behind the proposal for a 1.5% tax on cable, Netflix, and similar offers. The idea behind this is to strengthen the film and cinema industry in Costa Rica as well as create jobs.
Our country has so much human talent. We have editors, cameramen, screenwriters, and actors. We’ve stood out in international film festivals. The problem is that there isn’t really a culture of film appreciation here. Pouring funds into the industry should change this.
Adding such a small tax would mean only about ₡40 to subscribers but it will add up to a large fund to be used to benefit films made in the country as well as provide funds to the National Theater Company, Museum of Costa Rican Art, National Institute of Music ad the Cinema Center.
The services that would be taxed include Cabletica, Telecable, Tigo, Apple TV+, Netflix, HBO Go, Amazon Prime Video, Fox Premium Series, and Claro Video, among other similar platforms.
