Costa Rica News – A Costa Rican runner won a spot at the Xterra Trail Run World Championship to take place in Hawaii. He was extended the invitation after his victory at Xterra Costa Rica that took place last March.
The runner had the idea to sell ceviche to pay for his ticket. He distributed orders in Heredia, Alajuela and San Jose every Wednesday to Saturday on a motorcycle and with some help.
He managed to save $650, the average price of the air ticket and visa application. Two sponsors, the Public Service Company of Heredia and La Casa del Pie, offered him food and lodging. The organization paid his enrollment.
Sadly, his visa was denied, likely because he doesn’t have a stable job. He still has hope that with help from the Costa Rican Federation of Athletics and a certification from the Minister of Sports stating he will represent the country at the tournament, he may be able to make a second attempt at the American Embassy.
