Innovative Diplomacy at its Finest
Costa Rica unveils a groundbreaking approach to maintain its global diplomatic stature, yet effectively cutting overhead costs. The nation introduces a revolutionary program where ambassadors reside within its borders while overseeing their diplomatic duties.
Reaping the Benefits of Home-Ground Diplomacy
Avoiding extravagant expenses associated with establishing embassies abroad, such as leases, vehicular maintenance, and foreign salaries, is the primary motivation behind this strategy. By stationing these dignitaries within Costa Rica, the nation ensures continuity in diplomatic ties while simultaneously catering to its diaspora’s requirements.
Annual Country Visits: Keeping the Connection Alive
While the ambassadors will predominantly function from Costa Rica, they’re mandated to undertake at least one official visit to their assigned country annually. This ensures that they efficiently address tasks bestowed upon them by the Costa Rican Foreign Ministry.
Nations Embracing the New Modality
Portugal, Norway, and Denmark have already jumped on board with this innovative approach. While Sweden, Ireland, and Finland have received invitations, their verdict remains pending.
The Exception: A Glimpse into the Future
Costa Rica is potentially considering the establishment of a sole embassy in Riyadh, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in 2024. However, this is contingent upon Saudi Arabia initiating a regional representation within Costa Rica. For now, no existing embassies or consulates face closure next year.
Spotlight: Costa Rica’s Diplomatic Beacon
Flora Leah Venegas Corrales, Costa Rica’s freshly-appointed ambassador currently posted in Peru, exemplifies the nation’s diplomatic excellence. She brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as a consul in Miami, Atlanta (USA), and David (Panama).
