Costa Rica Picture of the Day (August 19th, 2013) – Each day the Costa Rican Times will be including a picture from around Costa Rica to see the natural beauty and amazing things that we get to see each day in the land of the Pura Vida.
The Costa Rican tropical weather makes the country a perfect host for some of the smallest birds, hummingbirds. These birds are known as hummingbirds because of the humming sound their wings make.
Their diet consists of nectar or sweet liquid found in flowers. Hummingbirds prefer liquid with a higher sugar content and reject anything less than 10 percent of sugar.
Hummingbirds have one of the fastest animal metabolisms that supports their fast moving wings.
Like many other birds, these species builds a nest to lay their eggs and incubate until they hatch. Males do not take any part in the nesting.
Costa Rica is full of hummingbirds because the weather conditions produce some of the sweeties flowers for these beautiful birds.
