Costa Rica Picture of the Day – Each day the Costa Rican Times will be including a picture from around Costa Rica to see the natural beauty and amazing things that we get to see each day in the land of the Pura Vida.
Saturdays in Playa Hermosa are a blast. Just ten minutes south of Jaco, the Backyard Bar hosts a weekly surf contest dubbed the Saturday Surf Series.
It’s a good day when you’re sitting on the beach at sunset sipping on ice cold beers watching local pro surfers go head to head on legendary waves.
From 4 p.m. until sunset, local talent rides the waves in the surf behind the Backyard Bar while locals and out-of-towners congregate on the beach stretching out on blankets, sitting on driftwood or watching from the bar’s patio with cocktail in hand. Local pro and the man on the mic Salsy Boy, follows the action announcing riders and giving the play by play.
The riders wait for the sets to roll in and when a good wave comes through a battle ensues. The riders add their style to the vitiating waves with some of them carving out the waves, while others race down the line to get enough speed to pull aerial trick; as each rider makes his move and eventually his trick the crowd cheers.
The sun eventually cuts the horizon and the ending horn will sound putting the contest to an end. The beachgoers now crowd the bar and dance floor to await the announcement of the winner. The grill at this point is well fired up and the band starts to get into the groove. The winner is announced then praised by the crowd and then it’s time for a live music fiesta!!
