Costa Rica News – Pediatricians from the Puntarenas Hospital are treating a baby diagnosed with microcephaly from zika.
When a motorcycle arrived at the house of the family and the mom was informed the test came back positive she burst into tears.
Pregnant women are at the highest risk because contracting the virus can cause congenital problems to their babies. Aside from microcephaly, it can cause blindness, deafness and neurological and motor problems.
The 21-year old mother contracted zika at 17 weeks pregnant. Previously, she had dengue and chikungunya.
Her mother warned her and she feels guilty for not using repellent.
The baby appears normal and there is hope that in finding the disease early she will develop normally.
The disease in new in the Americas and we must wait to see what will happen.
