Costa Rica News – It’s almost December already. On the 2nd, 260 contestants will line up on border between Panama and Costa Rica to participate in the Adventure Race World Championship.
They will get their first glimpse of the map that outlines their 815 km winding route through the country.
This is a team race that is mixed gender. Teams consist of four members who will go from coast to coast, from the border with Panama to the border with Nicaragua. They will be biking, rafting, trekking, rappelling, and kayaking nonstop.
Serious contestants try to keep the endurance going with little rest. The organizers believe the winning team will take 140 hours over 6-7 days to complete the trek.
“If you sleep, you lose time,” said the director, Antonio de la Rosa.
This year’s teams come from 25 countries.
The reigning champion is New Zealand’s Seagate, who will try to retain their title.
This is the third adventure sports world championship to be held in Costa Rica. They have hosted the surf and rafting world championships in the past. Costa Rica is a leader in adventure sports and has shown the world they have what it takes to organize such huge events.
