The Costa Rican Railway Institute (Incofer) has awarded a contract to CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., purchasing eight new trains. Each will have air conditioning and capacity for 372 passengers.
They will arrive in the first half of 2020. Each one will double the capacity of the current trains. The purpose of these units is to maintain service while the electric train project is underway.
The trains will have a length of 38 meters, preferential seating, wheelchair spaces, and LED screens with information. The new railways will have intercoms for the driver to make announcements as well as an emergency alarm system for passengers.
The trains have an estimated duration of up to 30 years. This means that they can coexist with the electric train. In the future, they may even be used to reactivate some routes such as to Limon, Orotina, and Puntarenas.
