Costa Rica News – The Farmer’s Market in Santo Domingo will no longer uses plastic bags, a measure that will both allow producers to save ¢8 million a year and help the environment as well as Costa Rica’s green image.
Luis Diego Calderón became affectionately known as “Bolsas,” “Bags,” because for 27 years he has sold reusable bags at the market. He was seen in a T-shirt that said “Without plastic bags, please.”
He could not be happier that the producers and municipality, supported by Camposanto La Piedad, launched this campaign against plastic bags. This will mean 400 kilos of plastic a month no longer ending up in the ocean.
500 cloth bags were given out to customers. In the next two months, 150 cloth bags will be distributed each week in order to aid in the transition. The fair takes place on Saturdays from 5 to 2 in front of the town square.
