Police had to intervene to bring order back to Santa Cruz. While the celebrations of Santo Cristo de Esquipulas typically draw 200,000 people, this year they’ve been canceled due to the pandemic.
Still, many disrespected the sanitary measures. The police operation led to the closure of two liquor stores and four bars and restaurants that failed to comply with sanitary capacity measures.
Additionally, a reckless driving case was transferred to be opened into a criminal case, a fight between ten people was broken up, and over 100 people were caught drinking on public roads. There were riots and a lack of respect for social bubbles.
At least 8 police units were involved in shutting down the celebration. Cantonal peace has been restored and the Public Force as well as the Santo Cristo de Esquipulas de Santa Cruz National Sanctuary reiterated that all activities related to this festival are suspended. Unauthorized parties, horsemen, bull riders, and dancers in the middle of the street, and large groups of people will not be allowed.
