Costa Rica News – ICT, Costa Rica’s Tourism Institute, officially presented nine new “Blue Flags” in the canton of Aguirre. The presentation happened yesterday, by Pedro Gonzalez, the regional ICT director.
These blue flags represent an ecological program designed to get communities interested in taking care of their beaches. Aguirre was the only canton to score all of the possible flags.
Manuel Antonio Beach earned the highest score in the area, three stars. The other beaches-Macha, Barú, Espadilla sur, Gemelas, Pará, Matapalo, Espadilla norte y Playitas each got one or two.
One star is given for having clean water. To get more stars, the towns should provide education to children about being friendly to the environment, they should have lifeguards at the beaches, and they should provide restrooms and trash cans.
The only beach in the Central Pacific to earn five stars was Playa Blanca at Punta Leona.
