Costa Rica News – For all of you that are in the mood for some tasty Texas/Costa Rica chili this weekend as well as want to contribute to a good cause you might want to head to Atenas. The community that brags the best climate on earth will be hosting it’s annual Chili Cook Off.
This is a great event to support the Hogar de Vida. Hogar de Vida in Atenas offers a ray of hope for children in need. It provides refuge to children age’s birth to 10 – up to 35 children are living there at any given time.
Tim and Dena Stromstad, founders of a Guatemalan home for children in the early 90’s, were called to start another children’s home here in Atenas. In 1995, Hogar de Vida’s doors were opened to children – it started with one home and has now grown to three homes, supervised by experienced and loving “Tias” or aunties. Tim and Dena live on the property and oversee all operations at Hogar de Vida.
Many of these children come to Hogar de Vida from poverty conditions, have been abandoned or come from abusive situations – including sexual, physical or emotional. Hogar de Vida’s mission is to give love, protection and a substitute family for these at-risk children. Hogar de Vida helps to meet the children’s needs by offering a stable home, good nutrition, clothing, education, trustworthy authority figures and spiritual training.
