The latest numbers reveal 50 patients infected with covid-19 in Costa Rica. Four of them are in intensive care. 40 of them are adults, six are seniors, and four are minors. The patients are between ages 10 and 87. 24 are women and 26 are men. 44 are Costa Rican and 6 are foreigners. The affected people are from 19 cantons. The only provinces without cases are Limon and Puntarenas.
The Costa Rican Social Security Fund intends to use the National Rehabilitation Center (Cenare), in La Uruca, to serve covid-19 patients, thus keeping them separate from other patients and avoiding overflows in hospitals. The rehabilitation and outpatient surgeries that were scheduled there may be reassigned to the Trauma Hospital.
Keep in mind that only 8% of the infected are in intensive care. Many can be quarantined at home. Some are already recovering and just awaiting tests to confirm that they no longer have the virus.
On Monday, there were shortages in some supermarkets because of people hoarding supplies and food. The Government reiterated that the national supply is strong and there is no risk of long term shortages. Additionally, school cafeterias are open to ensure that minors get meals.
