Costa Rica Health News – ajaira García Gómez says she doesn’t remember anything but waking up in a hospital in a lot of pain.
She, a pregnant woman, had suffered hepatic failure after years of liver problems.
Specialists at Calderón Guardia Hospital determined that the only option was a transplant.
This became the first such procedure done on a pregnant woman in all of Central America.
Because of the urgency, surgery couldn’t be avoided. She was a “40” on the 1-40 scale of severity. Without surgery, she and the baby would have died. Extra care was taken to control the bleeding and the anesthesia.
Luckily, the uterus and liver are far apart.
Yajaira is at 21 weeks of gestation. She and the baby have recovered fine although she is still in the hospital.
She says that she feels great, even as if she was born again. She was overjoyed hearing the baby by ultrasound.
