A Ravaging Mudslide and its Impact
Aguas Zarcas, a serene town in Costa Rica, has recently faced an unforeseen calamity that cost its residents their homes and livelihoods. An unanticipated mudslide transformed into an avalanche, causing the local river to overflow with tremendous force.
The devastation was unimaginable. One particular house situated about four blocks from the river had mud reach up to the ceiling, resulting in the total loss of every item within. Houses collapsed like mere cardboard boxes under the violent impact of the natural disaster.
A Local Businesswoman’s Life Savings Wiped Out
Among those who bore the brunt was a 37-year-old mother of three and business owner. She saw her entire life savings wiped out by the unforeseen flood. Over the past 15 years, she had established seven stores, including a gym, four restaurants, a small INS office, several apartments, and warehouses. Many of her tenants had been there for over a decade. Tragically, everything was destroyed, including a recent investment to refurbish the roofs on her properties.
A Narrow Escape for Restaurant Owner
In contrast, a local restaurant owner had a narrow escape from the disaster. He believed a divine premonition guided him to leave his restaurant just as it began to drizzle, around 25 minutes before the river unleashed its fury. The owner and his wife left in time, escaping the catastrophe that soon engulfed their business.
The Aftermath: Homes Lost, Lives Spared
In the wake of the disaster, several residents of Aguas Zarcas found themselves homeless. However, amidst the extensive property damage, a silver lining emerged: no lives were lost or individuals injured.
