World News – A 23-year-old tourist suffered fatal injuries while bungee jumping from a bridge in southern Spain, local police told NBC News on Wednesday.
The British woman’s aunt was watching as the victim struck an older, stone bridge below, officials said.
Salvador Sifuentes, spokesman for the local police in Granada, said officials were investigating whether there was an error in calculating the length of the bungee rope.
“The girl’s body was left hanging … she did not hit the ground,” he added.
The incident occurred near the town of Lanjaron, 20 miles south of Granada.
The victim was a London resident who had been in Spain visiting her aunt, according to Sifuentes.
She died at around 3 p.m. Tuesday (9 a.m. ET) after jumping from the Tablate Bridge, a popular bungee site that has a drop of 250 feet, according to local tour operators.
Two other bridges cross the ravine there, according to local officials.
The U.K. Foreign Ministry confirmed a British national had died in Spain. “We are liaising with the Spanish authorities and have contacted the family to offer support at this difficult time,” a spokesman said.
