Costa Rica Travel – One of the world’s greatest natural treasures is going on the British Airways route map next spring.
New direct flights from Gatwick to San Jose, the capital of stunning Costa Rica, start on May 4 next year.
While the Central American nation is only about 0.1% of the planet’s landmass, it contains 5% of the world’s biodiversity and around 25% of its land area consists of national parks and protected areas.
Besides rich flora, lush volcanic landscapes and rainforests, Costa Rica is also home to big cats, monkeys, reptiles, amphibians and 840 species of birds.
And of course there are fabulous beaches to relax on too.
BA customers will initially be able to fly twice a week to San Jose’s Santamaria airport during the summer, rising to three a week in the winter, on a Boeing 777.
Colm Lacy, BA’s head of commercial at Gatwick, said: “With everything from its incredible wildlife, rugged rainforests and volcanic peaks, as well as stunning beaches and – of course – world-famous coffee – Costa Rica offers an incredible array of places to visit and experience.

Hand baggage rules tightened up
BA is clamping down on excess hand baggage. The new rules are:

- The size of your additional cabin bag remains unchanged and should be no larger than 56x45x25cm and can weigh up to 23kg
- Travellers in economy and premium economy will get a yellow tag for handbag/laptop sized bags which are within the new dimensions and the carrier will guarantee they can be taken on board. The tag must be visible for boarding and the bag must be placed under the seat in front.
- Passengers with hand baggage which is outside of the allowance will be asked to check it into the hold.
