Costa Rica News – The Costa Rican toucan which lost it’s beak to some teenage thugs may be betting an early Christmas present.
The stage has been set for animal prosthesis in Central America.
Costa Rican companies Elementos 3D, Ewa!corps, Publicidad Web and Grupo Sommerus have taken on the project of helping out a toucan in need.
Grecia is a toucan who suffered abuse to his beak, rendering him unable to eat alone.
He tries to eat but in the end can’t get enough food without help from the rescue workers at Zoo Ave.
A beak also serves for grooming, defense and attracting a mate. In nature, a beak grows along with the bird so the prosthesis must also be adjustable. Three-dimensional models of beaks are being made as the toucan recovers.
They are using keratin to form the structure because of its rigidity and fibrous structure.
They are taking care in finding a way to attach it in a way that is strong enough to be usable without coming off.
