Costa Rica News – The National Association for the Protection of Animals offers arguments in favor of adopting pets over buying them. Anyone thinking about adding a pet to the home and family is likely to face this decision.
One argument in favor of adoption is that this is a responsible measure to stop overpopulation by taking animals off the street and castrating them. There are currently more dogs and cats in Costa Rica than homes willing to give them a place to live with dignity.
Secondly, buying fosters the business of breeding to sell when so many animals are already born and in terrible conditions. These “hatcheries” are often inadequate in that they do not consider the health of the animals, just the money they can make. They are overcrowded and have cages on walls. Some animals spend years without touching the floor.
Lastly, adoption can be seen as an act of nobility that brings rewards to the owners and animals. The bonds created with adopted animals are often very strong. They are wonderful company.
Just like when buying, when adopting, one must think it through and not do it impulsively. Do you have the time, space and resources to care for the pet in the right way?
