The Virgin of the Angels, Virgen de los ángeles, has long been a symbol of faith and hope to Costa Ricans. Many pray to “la negrita” and claim miracles. The image of the patron saint was taken this morning on a flight over the country to bring hope.
In addition to inspiring faith and strength among Costa Ricans, the flight is meant to reiterate the stance of the Catholic Church that we should diligently follow the precautions put forth by the Ministry of Health.
The flight of hope started with a priest from the basilica, Francisco Arias, bringing the image to the plane through rows of firefighters saluting. The general public was asked to avoid crowds and rather participate from home by waving handkerchiefs.
The priest explained that while we often come to visit the virgin at her home, this time she will come to visit all of us. The visit is done by air and without stops as to avoid people gathering at a specific spot.
