Costa Rica News -In 54 days, Costa Rica has spent all the fuel-based energy that was planned for use for the whole year.
Aresep had estimated that 131 GWh for the year, January through December, but that was used in less than two months.
From March 15 to May 7, ICE generated 132.6 GWh of fossil fuel based energy. This is a more expensive type of energy because of the additional cost of importing the bunker or diesel. It also pollutes with more emissions.
ICE removed the Reventazón plant in February for repairs that will last about 6 months. This hydroelectric plant contributed 507 Gigawatts of energy in the first quarter of last year.
Thermal energy represents 3% of the national consumption. The rest of the consumption comes mostly from hydroelectric sources (65%), wind (21%), geothermal (9%) and biomass (2%).
