Costa Rica News – The birth of the 5 millionth Tico inhabitant was expected to happen around March 25th but the expected event has been postponed to July 16th.
This change is because there were fewer births than expected in 2017, even fewer than in 2016. There was also an increase in the number of deaths in 2017.
We are not talking about the 5 millionth birth, rather the 5 millionth living inhabitant. This takes into account the number of births and deaths each year. It is a figure that represents how many Ticos are alive and requiring public services.
The National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) now estimates that the country will reach 5 million living inhabitants on July 16th, 2018, at 7am. This assumes a net migratory balance of zero, because the number leaving the country and entering the country are equal, meaning the population will grow by births and increase by deaths. There is only a 9% chance that the 5 millionth tico will be an immigrant compared to a 91% chance that he or she will be born in the country.
The four millionth Tico was born on February 24, 2001. By 2030, there will be more people over age 65 than under 15. The six millionth Tico is expected in 2045. After that, the population is expected to decline.
