President Carlos Alvarado spoke at the inauguration of the PreCOP25 Climate meeting in front of 1,500 delegates from 85 countries. This event was held at the National Convention Center, in Heredia.
The President cited a study by the UCR that revealed how Costa Rica will actually have $19.5 billion in profits following meeting the projected goals for the 2018-2050 National Decarbonization Plan.
There are ten axes to the plan. If the objectives in public, private and freight transport are met by 2050, the benefit will be obtained. This involves the country investing $6,000 million in infrastructure and receiving a revenue of $11.1 billion, leaving a net profit of $5.2 billion. Another 14,300 million would come from health, productivity and accidents avoided.
President Alvarado said “environmental ambition is not only ethically correct with the present and future generations, but it is profitable.” He also made mention of a request he made to prohibit oil exploitation.
