San José, Costa Rica, is gearing up for its brightest night of the year! This December 16th, the 26th edition of the Festival de la Luz will transform the city into a kaleidoscope of lights, music, and festive cheer. If you’re planning to navigate the capital’s streets or attend this Christmas extravaganza, here’s what you need to know to make the most of this glittering event.
Light Up the Night: The Festival’s Dazzling Details
Kicking off at 6 p.m., the festival will light up the route from the National Gymnasium in La Sabana to the Chinese Arch in Paseo de los Estudiantes. Before the main event, a pre-show street parade starting at 3 p.m. will feature over 2,000 artists from various artistic genres, setting the stage for an electrifying evening.
Navigating the Festival: Road Closures and Recommendations
Traffic closures will begin on Friday, December 15th, at 10 p.m. to set up barricades and structures from the León Cortés statue to the corner of San Juan de Dios Hospital, and along the second avenue to Plaza de la Democracia. This area will reopen on Sunday at 5 a.m. Additionally, regulated traffic flow and rerouting will occur around La Sabana.
Safety First: Security Measures and Alcohol Ban
Authorities, including the Municipal Police, Public Force, Traffic Police, Fire Department, Child Welfare Agency, Red Cross, and Ministry of Health, will conduct operations throughout Saturday to ensure a safe and orderly festival. Rentals of chairs or spaces, roping off areas, and street vending are prohibited. A ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol will be in effect from midnight on Saturday to Sunday.
Attending the Parade: Tips for a Great Experience
If you’re heading to the parade, leave valuables at home. Ensure young children carry a note with parental contact details in their clothing. Pack extra jackets, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, hydration drinks, umbrellas, and raincoats.
Meet the Marshal: Costa Rican Band Malpaís
Renowned Costa Rican band Malpaís, celebrating their 25th anniversary, will lead the parade as the marshal. Contrary to tradition, they’ve chosen to walk the route, offering a personal touch to their role.
Floats and Marching Bands: The Stars of the Show
From banks to telecommunication companies, the parade will feature nine eye-catching floats, including those from Banco de Costa Rica, Tropical, Kölbi, and the Municipality of San José. Fifteen marching bands from across the country will add rhythm and energy to the night.
A Night to Remember
As San José gears up for this magical evening, residents and visitors alike can look forward to an unforgettable experience filled with light, music, and community spirit.
