A Grim Turn of Events at an Unlicensed Wildlife Facility

In a distressing development during a wildlife rescue operation in Orotina, Alajuela province, Costa Rica, an emu died, casting a shadow over efforts to save animals from an unlicensed facility. The operation, conducted on Monday by the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) under the Ministry of Environment and Energy, was initiated following complaints about illegal wildlife possession at La Granjita.

The Loss of the Emu: A Seven-Year Resident of La Granjita

The emu, a long-term resident of La Granjita along with its companion, succumbed in the midst of the rescue process. SINAC officials are currently investigating the cause of death, and a necropsy is being conducted to uncover the details of this unfortunate incident.

Relocation and Rescue of Other Animals

The rescue operation did manage to save several other animals, including two emus, a tepezcuintle, 12 pheasants, a green iguana, four scarlet macaws, a blue and yellow macaw, and two white-tailed deer. These animals were transferred to legally registered wildlife management facilities, where they will receive veterinary care and attention to improve their living conditions.

Substandard Conditions at La Granjita

SINAC’s inspection of La Granjita revealed inadequate conditions for wildlife, with the facility lacking the necessary permits. The animals were found in enclosures in poor repair, with insufficient provisions for food and hygiene, raising serious concerns about their welfare.

The Owner’s Response

Francisco Araya, the owner of La Granjita, maintained that he had legally acquired the animals years ago. However, he admitted facing challenges in complying with the revised Wildlife Law of 2017. In 2019, he consented to SINAC’s decision to relocate the animals but insisted that they were well-cared for under his ownership.

This incident underscores the critical need for proper licensing and humane conditions in wildlife facilities. It also highlights the necessity of reporting illegal wildlife possession.
